Transition from Classroom to the Corporate World – What You Need to Know?

This is exactly where most of us go wrong. The adaptation part I meant. Bungee-jumping into the corporate world without prior and proper homework is like the most innovative self-killing method ever invented.

College binds students with academic assignments and tasks which can be solved by copybook methods or by sharing notes among friends. But not in Corporate world. Late night studies don’t yield the same GPAs or equivalents, sharing notes don’t help as much as it always used to.

So, way out? What should be on the checklist of a student about to jump the corporate bandwagon just after finishing college?

Here’s the deal. We will provide you with a six point solution to all your worries and you can thank us later.

1. Expectations Management: – This is one part that almost everyone gets wrong and burns his/her hands with. Ever wondered while you slog it out day and night in office, your work is not being recognized, let alone be rewarded. What could possibly be wrong? We let you in the BIGGEST secret of a successful corporate career. Consider this; say a particular task would normally take 4 days; you being super enthusiastic promised your manager that it would get done in 2 days and delivered it on day 3. The Smart Alec next cubicle negotiated and promised his manager to get this done in 6 days and delivered on day 5. While theoretically you did the job 2 days faster than Smart Alec who do you think would win the praise from the boss.

You guessed it right – Smart Alec. Remember he delivered the task a day before what he had promised and you delivered it one day after the date you had committed and hence your manager’s expectations were not met. This delay beyond expectations may have also impacted downstream activities. Remember, Negotiation and Ability to say No are critical skills that you need in order to do a good job of expectation management.

2. Work-life balance: -So far life was all about well, life. College was mostly fun with occasional work (read quizzes and exams) related distractions. Enter corporate life, and given how competitive all of us are, the work takes the front seat and everything else goes on back burner. The time that you could spend pursuing your hobby (singing, guitar, weekend travels, sketching, social work) or with your family is spent toiling in office because that seems the only way forward. Before you know you have developed a paunch, struggle climbing stairs up, don’t know when was last you met friends and family, or went to this musical show you never used to miss. Do NOT fall into the trap.

Remember its not studying for a quiz or one assignment submission any more where one night slogging is justified; this is how you would spend REST of your life. Value your weekends, maintain a disciplined schedule (there is a reason 9 to 5 came in existence) and ensure there is life outside work as well. We work to live and not live to work. This may sound a rebellious advice, but its NOT. Taking time off for yourself would help you become more productive in the hours that you spend in office and hence its a win win- numerous studies have proven that.

3. Soft skills! Sigh!: – Soft Skill. How apt name for something which you either are born with, or are fed by the grumpy Placement Officer of your college, or you never get to manage the head and tail of in your entire life. Once you join the corporate world, you will realize that being able to communicate well with your colleagues, seniors and bosses at job means much more to you than anything else. A job is where you spend almost half of your life, if not more. And most of the fun, frolic, friendships during the entire tenure builds up due to the reasons like how approachable you are, how articulately you can gather your thoughts and present in front of others, and how well you can make others feel at ease in your company. Keep the following in mind:

a) Follow discipline. Most corporate offices have their individual policies regarding the same.
b) Be a team player – you should be able to work collaboratively across teams
c) Plan well and to the last level of details – Be it time management, work-division planning, or even planning an after-work cubicle-party.
d) Multitasking and problem solving abilities – Hope you know how important these two are for a working executive. Wait, or even for a student.
e) Also, flexibility, creativity, patience, self-motivating powers help.

4. Time Management Skills: -The corporate world lets you unearth the various skills you never knew you had. Time management is one such important part of having a white collar job. If you are too used to bunk classes and spend the entire time in the college canteen, if you are used to not study for the whole year and do it only when the exam is just a week or a fortnight away, if you pull off an all-nighter with friends for assignments and before weekly quizzes; you will soon realize that corporate world does not afford you the luxury of indulgence like these. Once you leave college, working on projects and assignments in the stipulated period, submitting them before the deadline is going to be a regular feature of the work life.

5. Just another job or a true calling?: – Most of the students go through this ordeal. Now, notice the order carefully – Join a college (Engineering? The quickest route to Nirvana?), stagger through the three/four years (Stagger, yeah that’s the word!), grab a job by campus placement process (who cares which company it is!), and then drag oneself against one’s will in the job. It’s really disgraceful if you take your job for granted, and continue with it just as a matter of fact. Wait before it strikes you at the place where it hurts the most. Are you really living up to your own expectations? Are you really doing justice to yourself? A job is not what you do just to grab a hefty pay-cheque at the end of the month. A job is what you spend more than half your life at, and hence, that it should be meaningful to you is just an understatement.

6. Be prepared for the worst: – If you are a fresher, you need to be prepared for many unexpected things ahead of you. Most of the times, students dream big while joining the company they have been recruited by. At the end of month one or two, most of them fail to recognize in themselves the zeal or excitement they had before joining. For one, the work pressure takes its toll on you. Number two, most of the work a recent college grad is given is entry level. Bright students find it hard to accept the fact that they are put in the same seat as another average guy. Expectation, they say, causes equal frustration. Be it life, be it work. Mental strength, on all fronts, saves you from drowning under the pressure of your own expectations and personal goals. It’s appreciated to have the ambition to move up the corporate ladder faster but remember there is no shortcut for hardwork.

Rajeev was going through the most difficult time of his life when he had two offer letters in his hand – both from two of the leading software companies of the country. This type of difficulty he always savors, for the reason that it gives him the opportunity to become spoilt for choices. But one thing he was not sure of; how to reconcile to the fact that life will no longer be the never-ending Christmas party that college was always to him. This article is specifically for students and recent grads like Rajeev. I know you are one since you are still on the article and finally, reading this line. Hope it helps. All the best!

Virtual internships – A Student’s Perspective

Rajeev has graduated recently and is waiting to join the permanent posting with the company he was recruited by on the campus. In the meanwhile, Rajeev has decided that he won’t just sit back home, and rather will spend his time meaningfully. And hence came up the idea of doing an internship. Soon enough he grabbed one (the genius that he is), and then he faced the greatest dilemma – to move out of home or not to move out of home. Being his last vacations, he wanted to spend as much time with the family as possible and hence he chose a work from home internship. He is an intern now who can work from his drawing room couch, while on the move in his car, and even updates the latest excel sheets while gulping down a burger at the nearest fast food joint.

Rajeev is not alone. Gone are those days when the employers used to be adamant not to allow the interns a single day of respite from the heavy work they are bestowed upon. With changing times, it’s not surprising that work from home internships, better known as virtual internships, are supported by many of the companies all over the world.

So, what is a virtual internship?

Virtual internships, where the intern never sets foot in the employer’s office, are growing in popularity, particularly for small and web-based companies who look to hire talented employees from a wider geographical region.

Virtual internships give students and employees the opportunity to handle the job ‘their way’, and yet be productive enough for the company. “I did not have to compromise on my passion for sports journalism. While I am based in Goa, ‘The Sports Campus’ from Noida gave me the perfect opportunity to work from home according to my preference of time. My mentor used to communicate with me on a regular basis over phone and email”, says Aditya, a BITS Pilani (Goa campus) student about his recent summer internship experience.

The trend that started in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the IT boom has now become a common practice among students all over the world. Most of the times students and employees who are unable to travel to the office locations are the ones who take up virtual internships. With the huge potential in Indian market, it’s becoming a popular practice for US based start ups also to outsource their works to interns here. Most of them pay well, and hence students, mostly in their undergraduate days, flock in lots to gather experience (hence, build up the CV) and start earning while still in college.

What are the advantages of a virtual internship?

1. Flexibility – For students with all round repertoire and interests, juggling between all of them and giving equal importance at the same time just becomes easier with work from home internship option. With round the hour internet accessibility, you can decide how to spread out your tasks in the calendar, and get each of them done accordingly.

2. Motivation – With friends and families around all the time, and not the boss, ‘being happy’ is just an understatement. “The fact that I can work in my pajamas with none to question me helps me a lot to concentrate on the actual work I am supposed to do”, says Sradhha, who interned with a web development company based in Mumbai last year.

3. Productivity – Less commuting time, less interruptions by colleagues can often work wonders for concentration.

4. Financial gains – If it happens to be a paid internship, saving on the transportation cost helps the students to save the entire pay package.

What are the limitations?

1. Limited mentoring & guidance – Since mostly the interns are fresh graduates or still in college students, they need continuous guidance. Rajeev never wants his skill set to become stagnant over time with the lack of mentoring. Hence, he makes it a point to mail him at least once a day, have some meaningful conversations, and learn new things.

2. Team Spirit – “A virtual internship is very much like a long distance relationship. The learning could be limited as not enough face time is available with the mentor, the networking and team bonding may be weaker (nothing works like water cooler conversations or over team lunch banter to get to know your team and colleagues better)”, says owner of a Gurgaon based start-up.

3. Lack of motivation – Being out of sight may even trigger lack of dedication to the work culture. Students tend to waste productive daytime, and later slog during the nights to complete projects and tasks. With a dedicated 9 to 5 job, balancing work and life outside the cabin becomes easier. Bharat, an IIT-Madras final year student interning with a California based start up, says, “You should be really motivated yourself for the project you have taken up. That is a major pre-requisite to take up virtual internships.”

4. Trust Issue – As Aditya mentions, “It is very important that you do a thorough research on the company you are applying to for virtual internship. If needed, have a conversation with students who already interned with the company in the past. That helps a lot to grow trust on the company before you put in your full effort for it. Also, if the company promises payment, make it a point that you receive a legal note from them in writing.” With trust on stake, neither the interns nor the companies will like to take a chance.

However, many of these limitations can be overcome with a little more discipline and efforts from both the sides. One of the growing trends is for students to take up virtual internships in the same city as company’s office location so that one on one interaction can happen on weekends. In days to come, work from home internships are never going to be out of ‘fashion’. Sonal, a 2nd year undergraduate student with Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communications and a work from home intern with a start-up says, “I like virtual internships because these provide me with opportunities to handle my college studies as well as work on real life projects. Whereas, college helps me build the academic foundation for my career, my internship experiences will certainly help me a lot when I sit for campus interviews with MNCs.”

We agree.

How to make Twitter account for your blog update automatically (by extracting the RSS feeds)

feedburner-invasion

An avid Twitter user and also an active blogger myself, I used to update about my new blog-posts to my many followers on Twitter by posting the link of the posts to my timeline occasionally. Now it can be a really tiring job (if you happen to update your blog on a regular basis) to post the links every time you do another blog-post. So, that day this thought flashed to my mind, that why not I create a Twitter account for my blog also. The basic concept behind this being whenever I update any new blog-post, the account will automatically extract the RSS feeds from the blog and hence post the same in the timeline of the account, so that the other tweeps following can go through them. Thus it will be helpful to none other than me, otherwise which I would have needed to toil the same over and over again.
The next step was to execute this thought to reality, which is obviously the tougher part among the two. So, I set myself some priorities to do so:

  1. First, I have to get myself acquainted with the concept of RSS feeds to the extent that if any problem arises in the middle I wouldn’t have to ask for help to anyone. Not that I didn’t know anything about RSS feeds from before. But this determination paid me off later, while working on it.
  2. I read about RSS feeds extensively here:  http://www.problogger.net/what-is-rss
  3. The next priority was to find a good enough and deterministic way to embed the RSS feeds of my blog-posts into the twitter account extensively. Initially I thought this would be a tough one to do, but turned out it’s the easiest part. More of it coming later.

Now priorities being set, plans being done, it’s time to execute. Finding a definite way to embed the RSS feeds to the twitter account, rather choosing it was a tough call, since there are a few ways to do so. Though a coder myself, am still not that acquainted enough with the process of editing the API of the twitter account to get the RSS feeds embedded. So, I had to do something which will help me to avoid these intricacies. The link to this website: http://twitterfeed.com worked as the real saver!
And that did the rest of the work for me. What I did was to sit back and enjoy, though I had to get the Twitter account of my blog (@_M_A_D) created by this time and extract out the RSS feeds link from my blog through the Google feed burner I happen to use.
And thus, I was done.

[N.B. Well, I agree, the toughest part of writing this post was to get a suitable title for it. Phew!]

Browser Wars – Chrome vs. Firefox

Well, I never thought I will be coming back with this post here. But you never know. And I had to come back, intending to clear one of the most common confusions that most of the internet users face these days – Which browser is better – Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox?
By reaction of common end-users and laymen, we exclude here other popular browsers like Opera, Safari and Netscape and will try to include our discussions between the pros and cons of the above said two only.
We will settle our discussions among some preconceived points of discussion and thereby will try to compare between Chrome and Firefox on the basis of their performances in that particular sector. I think that will be fair enough.

1.Reliability: Mozilla Firefox was in its 3.1 version when Google released Chrome for the first time. And Mozilla already took enough pain to make Firefox have a good fan following already. And it turned out that Firefox served better in market than Mozilla’s another well-known product, Thunderbird. Reliability was never an issue with Firefox, and it already took its time to grow steadily when there was no other competitions in the market other than Internet Explorer, which already people had started ditching for it.
Chrome had the best advantage being a Google product itself. So, it never took much time to become well-known among users. Chrome took the advantage of the huge computing and hardware power that is Google and turned out to one of the most reliable browser ever. The whole credit goes to the multi processing system that it avails. This multi processor architecture helps a bad web page not to take down the whole browser, and thus, makes it reliable enough.

2.Speed: Although Firefox already had a steady fan base when Chrome came, it was never known for its speed. Rather, I have heard people say bad and critics criticize about the slow surfing in case of Firefox. With version 3.5 and 3.6, things have changed though, and Firefox has been much better these days. And one of the plugins, namely “FastestFirefox” it can perform faster. You can get the plugin here: Also with Tracemonkey Javascript platform, Firefox is much faster now.
Speed was always Chrome’s USP among the browsers, as I have already mentioned in my previous post. And with days things have been looking up. So, if you need fast page-loading, you know to which to turn your face.

3.Simplicity: When the term ‘simplicity’ comes into discussion in any Tech-Talk, Google is the answer. That day I was going through Google’s history and even in times like late 1990s (say 1998, when Google was in nascent state) Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the founders, made it a point to make the front page of Google clutter free and pure white, unlike most of the other websites of that time. Although things is better these days with CSS and Web 2.0, but still the benchmark of simplicity in design has always carried example as Google. Chrome is JUST another example of a simple and beautiful interface and user-friendly Google product.
In matters of simplicity in design and usage, Firefox can NEVER be better than Chrome. Period.

4.Searching: Now, what to say about searching when all you get in both the cases is none other than Google replying to your searches. :)

5.Privacy: A subtle point of discussion indeed. Since the advent of internet, a concern was always there that why should users be comfortable using it for all of their works if not they know that they are perfectly secure with their personal information and data online.
Some studies (funnily, those are being funded by Microsoft) have shown that Firefox, with many new versions is much susceptible to privacy threats than any other options. And with not-so-powerful processor it is a browser with a huge crash potential. With rogue pages, it can be the case that the whole browser can fall down.
Chrome was initially much susceptible to regular crashes too, specifically if you happen to use few of its beta versions. And one thing has always been told against Google is that they tend to monitor and collect user data, sometimes even before you hit enter. On the other hand, the advantage is that Chrome enjoys an ‘incognito’ mode(not sure how many of you know about this) that lets you leave no footprints on any of the pages you have ever been to. To use ‘incognito’ mode, go to options -> click ‘New incognito window’ or hit Ctrl+Shift+N.

6.Extensions/Plug-ins: Extensibility is always the option to get better. If USP of Chrome is Speed and reliability, USP of Firefox indeed are the v-a-s-t array of plugins that it offers. If you don’t know already, Mozilla has been a consistent Open Source giant, and Firefox is one of the most well-known Open Source softwares. So little wonder that it will have a huge support from a big community of developers from all over the world and provide its users with much options.
For Firefox plug-in directory, visit: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
Google is this aspect showed some immaturity in the previous years by not letting developers make extensions for it. One such incident:
“Google rejected Easy YouTube Downloader which was developed by Deepesh Agarwal. All he did was to port this popular Firefox add-on to Chrome.
Google clearly mentions that they will now allow such extensions, in their TOS they state:
4.4.1 You agree that you will not engage in any activity with the Gallery, including the development or publication of Products or other materials, that [.….] enables the unauthorized download of streaming content or media.
So what does this all mean? Google is not so open after all.”
But that was way before. Now you can get as many extensions and plugins for Chrome too as you want. But specifically I need to complain about the absence of a good enough ‘YouTube Video Downloader’ for Chrome, which is well available in case of Firefox. Whereas, for any other needs, Google Chrome extensions are as good as Firefox plug-ins, if not as varied and huge in number.
For Google Chrome extensions directory, visit: https://chrome.google.com/extensions and http://www.chromeextensions.org. Both of the sources are good, but personally I prefer the previous one, it being the official one.

And the fight goes on and on. For every positive reason for supporting one you give, its inevitable that you will get a negative one for the same. I think am not being particularly biased towards any of the above browsers. If really I had to become, I would have been for Firefox, myself being a Firefox Ambassador. So, I think I will not be hearing talks about my supporting Chrome too much! Just a thought! :) And I think the huge fan base of each of the browsers will agree with me more or less. And if you don’t, please don’t hesitate to comment your point of views below this post. That way things will be more transparent.
We all are owners of our own choices. After all what we think and is comfortable with will suit us the best.

Exams and a few outings..

Well, exams are much near now. Much nearer than I wish it was.
For us, things are going on a pretty flow though. In the sense that, you know you have got to through a lot of texts and studying. And when you do so, you feel so refreshed and confident, with the new found vigor and rationality.
The weather has been quite fine here for the last week, the sign of an oncoming monsoon (is it not already on btw?) making this place so cool all throughout the day and night. And that has been till now good for us.
Already in this week, we have had not one, two but three visits to Dominos – first one was when me, S and A met after a long time, and there were too many stuffs to catch up on. The next time, S had a visitor – a school friend to meet after about three years. So, what can be better than to chat and catch up (again!) and at the same time have good times with foods than Dominos? Well, we had to make a check of the economical sides too, but then not always you get the chance to meet and enjoy with a close friend staying at a far off place. And then, today we met R and S, again at Dominos, and the two had the most awesome deep crust Chicken Golden Delight Pizza I have ever had. I guess the last line (i.e. “I have ever had”) already makes you realize that we got a part from them too. Ha-ha
And obviously when we were so close to the favourite place that has the best Butter Corn, things became simpler. We had Corn with ‘generous helping of butter’ (as the menu read) and the Cappuccino from there. S was trying to have a bite or two from the Live Bakery too, but unlucky it didn’t give us much choice today, which we later realized that was tour good only. ‘Coz you know too much of these stuffs has the chance of not going well with our systems.
So, upto this time what we did was to just eat, eat and eat. After R and S left (they seemed to have a very good time with themselves and am so happy about that) and we had the Corn chapter over, time was to hit the local market to do some shopping, which apparently was more needed for S but turned out that I made some better deals than her. When we came out after half an hour, my hands were full but S was still planning about when to hit next. So very unnatural for here I must say!
That day I realized how little I spend my times these days taking snaps of places I visit and foods I eat. This was a very enjoying part till early this year, when I realized that all I used to do is not of much help, until and unless I get a good camera for myself.
And if things go well (as planned), maybe I will be getting one for myself during this fall, just before the Pujas.
I wish I could have posted the deep crust Chicken Golden Delight Pizza we had today here, but sigh!

[“American Corn with mayonnaise Oregano, lemon juice, green chillies”
D sent me this today when I was having a small chat with here over texts, and that’s when I realized that I HAVE TO hit the food counters today, yet again!]

Technology is a warfare..

Technology is a warfare. Yeah, you heard right. The way all the major Tech companies – namely Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook etc. (you may well notice the absence or rather the intended leaving out of Microsoft) have been coming up with newer and newer web based and offline applications and usabilities for their own user-bases, it’s obvious that things are really heating up!
It all started last November with the announcement of Windows 7 Operating System by Microsoft. They took the pain to market this so-waited product with so much value that even people from far-off countries got goodies and free DVDs from MS to organise Windows 7 launching party. We had our fair shares too, and trust me, it was too much fun!

Then came Twitter. Although Twitter is not in the game of Operating systems, but it can be said with enough confidence that it’s the most talked about Technical company today, all around the world. I, myself, have been quite active on the platform for the last one and a half years, and I really appreciate that it’s there. Twitter’s ‘Chirp Conference’ earlier the previous month saw world’s budding and already-famous developers gather in Palo Alto and let the CEOs, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, and others share the Twitter dreams with all of them. It’s said that with the ‘Chirp Conference’, Twitter has gone to a new height.
The funny part of the warfare as I said before is that, when one rival gets an upper hand, the others can’t just sit behind and watch. Next came Facebook, well aware and ready to take on. Facebook CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg also opened the Keynote of this year’s ‘F8 Conference’ and that too was a huge success too. But not much did Mark knew that the newly laid Privacy Features will pull his comoany in such troubled waters. The media coverage and outrages among the users have gone to such extent that recently an article on ‘Mashable’ recorded him say that Facebook is coming up with simpler privacy features soon. We, as mere users, can only hope!

Now, if you are asked to choose a company whose features and ideas you like the most, as I have seen among my friends and accomplices, ‘Google’ is always the option. If anyone of you go through the book ‘Google – The story behind’ by David A. Vise, your respect for the company’s ideals will increase manifold. Google also came up with its Developer Conference as recent as last week. And guess, what apart from announcing the advent of ‘Froyo’(from Frozen Yougurt) – the new version of Android OS, the most exciting thing Google has come up with is Google TV. Thanks to them, now you can watch as well as surf internet videos on the same screen. As per notification, the product will be in market from the later part of the year.
Now lets talk about Apple. Steve Jobs being the CEO, what more one needs to say about the company, and good enough that the products also have lived upto every expectations worldwide. Steve Jobs also announced the market launch of the much-coveted iPad earlier this year. And now, it being available already, feedbacks are quite positive on all fronts. And now TechCrunch announces that Apple is going to have another Developers Conference, named Worldwide Developer’s Conference(WWDC) very soon.
So, with all the happenings all around, we are just mere user bases all the above said companies always vie for. With all the advancements, let’s see how things turn out for betterment.
