Facebook Page: Another milestone

Yesterday, this blog crossed the 10,000 hits milestone. And in a fit of fake(?) satisfaction, I updated my status both in FB and Twitter that I will gift myself a ‘Page’ specific for @BetweenTL, i.e. this blog. @BetweenTL is as it is known in Twitter.

So, here it is, the page I mean: Between The Lines

Spent some considerable amount of time designing the logo, at the end which is surely the sucky part of everything. I asked S to design one for me,but somehow she could not manage it. Anyways, I took up the daunting task on myself only, consulted few friends, and finally came up with this:

Good to know that from now on I’ll not always need to post my own status updates for BTL on my profile. RSS Grafitti or Networked Blogs may do the same for me. Hoping to make things work out in a better way.

Badge is here too:

The Rockmelt experience

I got the chance to be a beta-user for the new ‘Social Browser’ (as Techcrunch calls it here) ‘Rockmelt‘ by receiving an invite from a friend on Facebook. It’s better to say here from before that it can be called the ‘Facebook browser’, given it can be connected using your Facebook profile (Oauth technology) and also the entire backbone of this browser is set on your connectivity to the world VIA Facebook.

I spent the entire evening today testing it, tweaking it, tasting it. And finally decided to mail the makers/developers of the product about my experience this far. Better this is my feedback to them.

The mail is quoted below as it was sent:

Hii,

Thanks for the awesome browser i.e. Rockmelt.

Being in the soical media scenario for sometime, it was not a surprise that a browser of this workability will make the rounds soon. Congratulations that you guys have been the first in that race.

Regarding Rockmelt, it’s cool. It’s trendy, sleek in appearance, glossy and everything else that has relation with it being glamorous. And the Chrome platform has just given it the bestest tweak possible.

Concerns:

1. Security. I will like you guys to look into this matter more if you want to have a stable user base in near future. Just think that when people are going to make Rockmelt their default browser, they will first think of the security of their accounts they will be handling in this platform. If that is under gray shades, there is no point using a browser, give any amount of gloss and applicability to it.

2. Speed. This is the major reason why we prefer Chrome and Safari over Firefox these days. Name a slower browser than Firefox, even if it has got hundreds and thousands of extensions to choose from.

3. Extensions. I toiled for 2-3 months for the perfect youtube-video downloader extension for Chrome before I got the perfect one 2-3 months before. Only for that reason I had to use FF when I needed to download any video from youtube. Look to it that it doesn’t repeat with you guys too.

Anyways, thanks again for this experience that’s Rockmelt itself. Good going! Get going!

Few tips just in case you get interested to use the browser itself and are already dying to get hold of an invite.

  1. Go to Rockmelt website and request for an early access by signing up with your email-id in the form to the left.
  2. Easier, and in case you don’t want to wait for eternity thinking when they are going to send you an invite, let me tell you that I have got some spare invites as a privilege given by the developers to the early beta users. In case you want to grab one such invite from me, leave a comment below. I will get back to you ASAP, until the invitations in my hand gets finished.
  3. The more you can pull in your friends or known ones here for invis, the more you have got the chance to grab one invi yourself. So, get going, NOW!

Adios, anyway.

How to make Twitter account for your blog update automatically (by extracting the RSS feeds)

feedburner-invasion

An avid Twitter user and also an active blogger myself, I used to update about my new blog-posts to my many followers on Twitter by posting the link of the posts to my timeline occasionally. Now it can be a really tiring job (if you happen to update your blog on a regular basis) to post the links every time you do another blog-post. So, that day this thought flashed to my mind, that why not I create a Twitter account for my blog also. The basic concept behind this being whenever I update any new blog-post, the account will automatically extract the RSS feeds from the blog and hence post the same in the timeline of the account, so that the other tweeps following can go through them. Thus it will be helpful to none other than me, otherwise which I would have needed to toil the same over and over again.
The next step was to execute this thought to reality, which is obviously the tougher part among the two. So, I set myself some priorities to do so:

  1. First, I have to get myself acquainted with the concept of RSS feeds to the extent that if any problem arises in the middle I wouldn’t have to ask for help to anyone. Not that I didn’t know anything about RSS feeds from before. But this determination paid me off later, while working on it.
  2. I read about RSS feeds extensively here:  http://www.problogger.net/what-is-rss
  3. The next priority was to find a good enough and deterministic way to embed the RSS feeds of my blog-posts into the twitter account extensively. Initially I thought this would be a tough one to do, but turned out it’s the easiest part. More of it coming later.

Now priorities being set, plans being done, it’s time to execute. Finding a definite way to embed the RSS feeds to the twitter account, rather choosing it was a tough call, since there are a few ways to do so. Though a coder myself, am still not that acquainted enough with the process of editing the API of the twitter account to get the RSS feeds embedded. So, I had to do something which will help me to avoid these intricacies. The link to this website: http://twitterfeed.com worked as the real saver!
And that did the rest of the work for me. What I did was to sit back and enjoy, though I had to get the Twitter account of my blog (@_M_A_D) created by this time and extract out the RSS feeds link from my blog through the Google feed burner I happen to use.
And thus, I was done.

Finally, link to my blog’s Twitter account: http://twitter.com/_M_A_D (See the specimen tweets as samples)

[N.B. Well, I agree, the toughest part of writing this post was to get a suitable title for it. Phew!]

Browser Wars – Chrome vs. Firefox

Well, I never thought I will be coming back with this post here. But you never know. And I had to come back, intending to clear one of the most common confusions that most of the internet users face these days – Which browser is better – Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox?
By reaction of common end-users and laymen, we exclude here other popular browsers like Opera, Safari and Netscape and will try to include our discussions between the pros and cons of the above said two only.
We will settle our discussions among some preconceived points of discussion and thereby will try to compare between Chrome and Firefox on the basis of their performances in that particular sector. I think that will be fair enough.

1.Reliability: Mozilla Firefox was in its 3.1 version when Google released Chrome for the first time. And Mozilla already took enough pain to make Firefox have a good fan following already. And it turned out that Firefox served better in market than Mozilla’s another well-known product, Thunderbird. Reliability was never an issue with Firefox, and it already took its time to grow steadily when there was no other competitions in the market other than Internet Explorer, which already people had started ditching for it.
Chrome had the best advantage being a Google product itself. So, it never took much time to become well-known among users. Chrome took the advantage of the huge computing and hardware power that is Google and turned out to one of the most reliable browser ever. The whole credit goes to the multi processing system that it avails. This multi processor architecture helps a bad web page not to take down the whole browser, and thus, makes it reliable enough.

2.Speed: Although Firefox already had a steady fan base when Chrome came, it was never known for its speed. Rather, I have heard people say bad and critics criticize about the slow surfing in case of Firefox. With version 3.5 and 3.6, things have changed though, and Firefox has been much better these days. And one of the plugins, namely “FastestFirefox” it can perform faster. You can get the plugin here: Also with Tracemonkey Javascript platform, Firefox is much faster now.
Speed was always Chrome’s USP among the browsers, as I have already mentioned in my previous post. And with days things have been looking up. So, if you need fast page-loading, you know to which to turn your face.

3.Simplicity: When the term ‘simplicity’ comes into discussion in any Tech-Talk, Google is the answer. That day I was going through Google’s history and even in times like late 1990s (say 1998, when Google was in nascent state) Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the founders, made it a point to make the front page of Google clutter free and pure white, unlike most of the other websites of that time. Although things is better these days with CSS and Web 2.0, but still the benchmark of simplicity in design has always carried example as Google. Chrome is JUST another example of a simple and beautiful interface and user-friendly Google product.
In matters of simplicity in design and usage, Firefox can NEVER be better than Chrome. Period.

4.Searching: Now, what to say about searching when all you get in both the cases is none other than Google replying to your searches. :)

5.Privacy: A subtle point of discussion indeed. Since the advent of internet, a concern was always there that why should users be comfortable using it for all of their works if not they know that they are perfectly secure with their personal information and data online.
Some studies (funnily, those are being funded by Microsoft) have shown that Firefox, with many new versions is much susceptible to privacy threats than any other options. And with not-so-powerful processor it is a browser with a huge crash potential. With rogue pages, it can be the case that the whole browser can fall down.
Chrome was initially much susceptible to regular crashes too, specifically if you happen to use few of its beta versions. And one thing has always been told against Google is that they tend to monitor and collect user data, sometimes even before you hit enter. On the other hand, the advantage is that Chrome enjoys an ‘incognito’ mode(not sure how many of you know about this) that lets you leave no footprints on any of the pages you have ever been to. To use ‘incognito’ mode, go to options -> click ‘New incognito window’ or hit Ctrl+Shift+N.

6.Extensions/Plug-ins: Extensibility is always the option to get better. If USP of Chrome is Speed and reliability, USP of Firefox indeed are the v-a-s-t array of plugins that it offers. If you don’t know already, Mozilla has been a consistent Open Source giant, and Firefox is one of the most well-known Open Source softwares. So little wonder that it will have a huge support from a big community of developers from all over the world and provide its users with much options.
For Firefox plug-in directory, visit: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/
Google is this aspect showed some immaturity in the previous years by not letting developers make extensions for it. One such incident:
“Google rejected Easy YouTube Downloader which was developed by Deepesh Agarwal. All he did was to port this popular Firefox add-on to Chrome.
Google clearly mentions that they will now allow such extensions, in their TOS they state:
4.4.1 You agree that you will not engage in any activity with the Gallery, including the development or publication of Products or other materials, that [.….] enables the unauthorized download of streaming content or media.
So what does this all mean? Google is not so open after all.”
But that was way before. Now you can get as many extensions and plugins for Chrome too as you want. But specifically I need to complain about the absence of a good enough ‘YouTube Video Downloader’ for Chrome, which is well available in case of Firefox. Whereas, for any other needs, Google Chrome extensions are as good as Firefox plug-ins, if not as varied and huge in number.
For Google Chrome extensions directory, visit: https://chrome.google.com/extensions and http://www.chromeextensions.org. Both of the sources are good, but personally I prefer the previous one, it being the official one.

And the fight goes on and on. For every positive reason for supporting one you give, its inevitable that you will get a negative one for the same. I think am not being particularly biased towards any of the above browsers. If really I had to become, I would have been for Firefox, myself being a Firefox Ambassador. So, I think I will not be hearing talks about my supporting Chrome too much! Just a thought! :) And I think the huge fan base of each of the browsers will agree with me more or less. And if you don’t, please don’t hesitate to comment your point of views below this post. That way things will be more transparent.
We all are owners of our own choices. After all what we think and is comfortable with will suit us the best.

Exams and a few outings..

Well, exams are much near now. Much nearer than I wish it was.
For us, things are going on a pretty flow though. In the sense that, you know you have got to through a lot of texts and studying. And when you do so, you feel so refreshed and confident, with the new found vigor and rationality.
The weather has been quite fine here for the last week, the sign of an oncoming monsoon (is it not already on btw?) making this place so cool all throughout the day and night. And that has been till now good for us.
Already in this week, we have had not one, two but three visits to Dominos – first one was when me, S and A met after a long time, and there were too many stuffs to catch up on. The next time, S had a visitor – a school friend to meet after about three years. So, what can be better than to chat and catch up (again!) and at the same time have good times with foods than Dominos? Well, we had to make a check of the economical sides too, but then not always you get the chance to meet and enjoy with a close friend staying at a far off place. And then, today we met R and S, again at Dominos, and the two had the most awesome deep crust Chicken Golden Delight Pizza I have ever had. I guess the last line (i.e. “I have ever had”) already makes you realize that we got a part from them too. Ha-ha
And obviously when we were so close to the favourite place that has the best Butter Corn, things became simpler. We had Corn with ‘generous helping of butter’ (as the menu read) and the Cappuccino from there. S was trying to have a bite or two from the Live Bakery too, but unlucky it didn’t give us much choice today, which we later realized that was tour good only. ‘Coz you know too much of these stuffs has the chance of not going well with our systems.
So, upto this time what we did was to just eat, eat and eat. After R and S left (they seemed to have a very good time with themselves and am so happy about that) and we had the Corn chapter over, time was to hit the local market to do some shopping, which apparently was more needed for S but turned out that I made some better deals than her. When we came out after half an hour, my hands were full but S was still planning about when to hit next. So very unnatural for here I must say!
That day I realized how little I spend my times these days taking snaps of places I visit and foods I eat. This was a very enjoying part till early this year, when I realized that all I used to do is not of much help, until and unless I get a good camera for myself.
And if things go well (as planned), maybe I will be getting one for myself during this fall, just before the Pujas.
I wish I could have posted the deep crust Chicken Golden Delight Pizza we had today here, but sigh!

[“American Corn with mayonnaise Oregano, lemon juice, green chillies”
D sent me this today when I was having a small chat with here over texts, and that’s when I realized that I HAVE TO hit the food counters today, yet again!]

Cappuccino and the Street Foods

“Rains have done the trick”, I said to myself.
And in return she guffawed “No dear, you are always like the one standing in front of me.”

Well, me and S were talking about the uninhibited lust for coffee or anything with a tinge tasting remotely like caffeine. Not that this one is a new phenomena, but unscrupulous as it is, this time, the lust seems to overpowering both of us. Café Latte and Cappuccino are to blame, she says. And I added Expresso to the list.
The last time I saw a real good movie in the theatres was ‘Avatar’ by James Cameron, and all the tries I afforded myself to better it went to vain. I also saw ‘The Hurt Locker’ on my laptop and am yet to make out the reasons for why it managed to fair better in the Oscars than ‘Avatar’. Now I may seem like moved to a very high extent by the movie, when actual fact is that am not. I just happen not to get a better film to watch than it.
Me and S saw ‘Kites’ that day in Inox, and let me tell you that it was hopelessly pathetic. I am still at loss of words regarding how the so-called grounded director-actor duo managed to dream big surrounding the poor storyline of the movie. Barbara Mori, the Spanish actress was fine enough in her jobs though. Hrithik was fine too, but this was the first time I felt even a Hrithik Roshan alone is not enough for a movie to work well. Surprising to realize ourselves that we have grown up so much!
It was during Kites that Cappuccino did the trick. Till that day Cappuccino was a mere regular, just present for the sake of it, and never big and important enough to vie for. But now, that Cappuccino, which eventually gave us the strength to tolerate sitting throughout the movie, has stood apart! Now I can safely line it beside Café Latte, the later one being the standard I always used to hold. During the times unlike now when I used to be a CCD regular Café Latter was in my Cold Coffee favourite areas, and thanks to the recent developments, it has manage to trespass to the hotter region too.
I started watching @Vendr.tv shows as Podcasts, and also thanks to iTunes have been downloading the episodes one by one. Yesterday night around 1.30 am I finished downloading the recent episode. And while going through I was like “YAY, I just got the best food show podcast ever!!” and was dancing around the room in a such a weird way that my roomie and other hostel-mates were looking at me with frowns as if I have recently got mad. Well, I can’t help when things are even remotely and delicately related to good foods! Vendr.TV and Daniel Delaney (@danieldelaney on Twitter), the host of the show has been awesome. Every week (though am not sure about the telecasting frequency of the TV show) they cover a Street Food cart or Local Cafes moving regularly throughout a long stretch of the various cities in the US, and as Dan puts it the aim is to ”pick out the best Street food habits in the whole of America”. Well, talking about Street Food delicacies I wish Dan could have covered India too, for as for us, though the food habits may not be as diverse and international as in America (for example Vendr.TV covers like Japanese, Italian, Bosnian etc. food cultures), but certainly it’s rich. Namely places like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi are oh-so-famous for street food habits. In this context I have to mention that am not much acquainted about the Street Food cultures of the other Indian cities. And I will like my readers to make some valuable inputs here for that matter.
These days the main advantage one gets is the exposure one can get through the social media networking sites. Like among all the episodes of Vendr.TV I went through (and that’s like about 10 of them till now), I was amazed to discover that even a small roadside food carts had their own domains and even Facebook and Twitter acoounts, and even more than one of them claimed that they get regular offers from office goers through their websites and Twitter @mentions and DMs. When I think about the same thing here in India, I can’t go further and soon enough I need myself to stop tracking down the wild dreams. Apologizing if I sound pessimistic enough. And in case, if any budding entrepreneurs are going through this post right now, you may have just got a new idea for the perfect start-up you were looking for all these times! :)
